In their own words

The Regional Food Bank will expand its long-standing School BackPack Program to Putnam County, which has a food insecurity rate of 8.6%, including 1 in 12 kids, and many individuals and families who earn too much to be eligible for Federal food assistance, who do not always know where they will get their next meal.

This grant will help to supply 30 students in Putnam County’s highest-need school district (Brewster Central School District) with a reliable supply of nutritious, kid-friendly foods for 30 weekends during the school year.

Who they are

The mission of the Regional Food Bank is to lead a network of partners to alleviate hunger, prevent food waste, and nourish the communities we serve. Our vision is that all people have the nutritious food they need to thrive.

What the program does

Through the Regional Food Bank’s School BackPack Program, students in participating schools who are deemed eligible by teachers and school staff are registered to receive bags of nutritious snacks and meal ingredients on Fridays during the school year. The bags, each weighing an average of 9 pounds, are filled with nutritious, kid-friendly items that are meant to nourish students through the weekend gap between Friday’s school lunch and Monday’s school breakfast.
