McGaw YMCA’s Food Program expansion will bring free, nutritious groceries and year-round youth meal access directly to working families at Foster School in Evanston’s 5th Ward—a low-income, low-access community with a high rate of students eligible for free-and-reduced-price meals.

By combining culturally responsive grocery choice with before-school, afterschool, break-day, and summer food supports, Albertsons Nourishing Neighbors can support and expand existing community-wide food access while helping create a reliable, dignified food-access hub where families already learn, work, and gather.

The McGaw YMCA cultivates the whole person, strengthens community, and provides equitable access to transformational experiences that uplift the mind, body, and spirit.

What the program does

McGaw YMCA will operate a new weekly, free Weekend Food Cart at Foster School in Evanston’s 5th Ward, directly providing 1,000 children, youth, and families with fresh produce and shelf-stable groceries while offering before-school, afterschool, break-day, and summer meals and snacks. The program expansion leverages community feedback to deliver culturally responsive, dignified food access in a high-need food desert, ensuring children stay nourished outside of regular school hours--all while supporting existing year-round access to nutritious food.
